Remote Viewing: Is It Real?

By Dan Eden

Remote Viewing is a talent where some individuals can get information from events and places that are far away in both distance and time. The phenomenon is not completely understood but has been repeatedly validated by experiments.

Remote viewing was popularized in the 1990s, following the declassification of documents related to the Stargate Project, a $20 million research program sponsored by the U.S. Federal Government to determine if there was any potential military application of psychic phenomena. The program was "terminated" in 1995, citing a lack of documented evidence that the program had any value to the intelligence community. At least that's the "official" position.

Many believe that the abilities of Remote Viewers are present in most people, and can be developed with the right instruction. That alone is perhaps reason enough to "officially" deny that it has any value.

Before I begin this fascinating story, let me relate a personal experience with this phenomenon.

About 10 years ago I was working for viewzone in a small one room office in Connecticut. It was very private and locked when I wasn't there. I was editing an article on Remote Viewing by Maximilian Joachim Sandor, Ph.D. Dr. Sandor agreed to send lessons on remote viewing and viewzone readers were enthusiastic about the topic.

In my own mind, I was not so convinced. One evening, just before I left the office, I found an old ceramic frog in the bottom of my desk drawer and placed it in a cardboard box that had arrived with some computer hardware earlier that day. I placed the box on a book shelf next to my desk and left the office. Later that night, at home, I posted a page on viewzone and asked if anyone could tell me what was in a box in my office. I described the box and said it was on a shelf -- nothing more.

The next day I got dozens of e-mails -- all wrong. But I got one that was different. It stated that there were two boxes in the office, one near some batteries and the other on a table. I checked the book case and noticed I had left a couple of AA batteries next to the target box. I removed the batteries and placed the ceramic frog exactly in the center of the box, posting another note that I had removed everything from around the box and stipulating that the object was in the exact center of the box.

That evening I received another e-mail from the same person, telling me that, "The object is, in fact, a glass frog. But the box also contains two crosses."

Shocked by the correct guess, I was puzzled by the reference to the "two crosses" and opened the box. At first there was nothing but the frog. But when I lifted the frog out of the box I remembered that I had drawn an "x" in the center of the bottom of the box... then, on the bottom of the ceramic frog I saw the second "x" where the price tag on the item had been marked down with a red marker. There were two crosses in the box.

The Experiment

Out of curiousity, let's try that again!

The photo on the right is of a small bamboo box that I had in my office. The actual size is about 2 inches square. It sits at the base of my iMac 24 inch screen.

I am going to give my coordinates here: 43 59' 42.76"N / 71 03' 32.14"W and let you know my office is on the second floor, on the East side of the structure.

Can someone tell me what is inside this small box?

You can send your replies to myristicin-at-hotmail-dot-com.

I'll be sure to write another story if someone can successfully guess the contents.

UPDATE: June 26, 2010: Received the following graphic in e-mail from a reader. He said he could not identify the object but had this initially drawn in pencil and then drew it in photoshop.

The object was a Schick Quattro Titanium Razor blade. I think this is a hit, don't you?

I have placed a different object in the small bamboo basket... so lets try this again!

Evidential Details

I could not have known that my impromptu experiment was an exact replication of the early research conducted at Stanford Univsersity back in the 70s. Working for the CIA, scientists were discovering that almost anyone could be taught to do this, given the right environment and circumstances. In their book, Evidential Details, by Seeds & McMoneagle, we learn that the Remote Viewing technique was thoroughly studied, refined and that operational procedures were established. Although the technique is not always accurate, the reasons for the inaccuracies were discovered, allowing some individuals to refine their abilities and achieve astounding success.

One of the most successful remote viewers was co-author, Joseph McMoneagle [right]. His track record remains classified, however it was impressive enough to have been awarded the U.S. Army's Legion of Merit Medal, one of the highest meritorious awards given to a civilian in America. Although McMoneagle still cannot talk about some of his top secret work for the government, he worked with Scott Seeds, co-author, on remote viewing two events that most people are very familiar with: the tragic death of Princess Diana (August 1997) and the disappearance of Amelia Earhart (July 1937) during her attempt to circumnavigate the globe in a twin engine airplane.

Joe McMoneagle [left in picture] was originally recruited to join the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) by Skip Atwater [right in picture]. Skip worked with the Department of Defense to find suitable candidates based on how long they had remained in certain difficult overseas positions.

If a certain position had a statistical average of, say, 6 months before the officer either requested or was forced to change his assignment, the recruiter would look for an officer who had remained longer than average. The thinking was that the officer must have some coping mechanism. It was believed that this mechanism was related to psi abilities. In McMoneagle's case, he remained in his position for a dozen years beyond the average time served in his job.

McMoneagle was the first remote viewer in the program and was given the designation "#001" and has the reputation as being the best of the best remote viewers. McMoneagle was somewhat unusual in that the way he received his target assignments was what is called a "double blind" method. The photograph or description of the target was placed inside an envelope, which was placed inside yet another envelope and was often in a different room from where Joe did his viewing.

This elaborate procedure was specifically designed to avoid what remote viewers call "front loading", where any hint or knowledge of the target can pollute the session and distract the viewer from receiving the subconscious perceptions. McMoneagle was always sure not to have a clue about the target.

Over the years, McMoneagle obtained additional training on a meditative technique called "Hemi-Sync©", developed by the Monroe Institute. This technique uses sounds of different frequencies, delivered through headphones, to harmonize the brain waves of the remote viewer, enabling them to quickly and more efficiently obtain access to their subconscious mind. According to McMoneagle, after using the recorded sounds for many years he no longer needs to use the headphones and can think about the sounds to obtain the same effect.

One of the most unusual tasks McMoneagle was ver asked to do was the remote viewing of the planet Mars. He was given a set of coordinates and told to view the location before the planet was in its current state. He described very tall and thin beings who constructed some sort of underground chamber to escape a cataclysm that they foresaw from space. The cosmic event eventually destroyed the planet and most of its inhabitants -- "most", because McMoneagle is reported to have described some of the Mars inhabitants as leaving their planet in something which resembled a boat just prior to its demise.

Where did they go?

In Evidential Details, McMoneagle targets the hotel where Diana and her fiancé, Dodi Fayed, had rested before taking the fatal drive in a limousine. As if making a movie, the opening scene focuses on Henri Paul, the driver of the limousine on that deadly night.

"I find myself standing next to a man who is inside some kind of public building. He is approximately five feet, ten inches in height, good build, good condition physically. He weighs about 165 pounds, is clean shaven, light brown hair, right handed, 38-40 years of age, and is not British or American; meaning he probably has another language other than English as his native tongue."
-- McMoneagle

The amazing thing, revealed in the book, is that McMoneagle is not only viewing the event, but he is doing so from instructions contained within an unopened envelope that has been delivered to him. In his detailed description of events, he replays the scene from the limousine driver's perspective, noting the instructions he receives from both Diana and Dodi. His conclusions, although they rule out any deep conspiracy to kill the Princess, are quite different from what many people have read in the news.

Amelia Earhart

For me, the most impressive example of remote viewing comes from McMoneagle's 1998 attempt at locating the remains of famed female pilot, Amelia Earhart. As described in Evidential Details, McMoneagle begins viewing his target in New Guinea on the tarmac of Lae Field, the last runway that Earhart, and co-pilot Noonan, left before their disappearance.

He views the airplane from inside and out, noting certain details that may have contributed to the confusion and disappearance. He also is able to see Earhart.

"Where is the target? -- I don't get anything really remarkable about the events or the take off from this airport, other than it seems to be unique that the pilot might be female. She also seems to be clearly in charge -- that is making all the decisions." -- McMoneagle

McMoneagle goes on to describe the events during the flight, the confusion that happened when their refueling stop was missed due to possible navigation errors, and their decision to ditch the plane near a small Pacific island. Be he does even more. He describes the crash site in exceptional detail, even pinpointing the location of the debris.

"650 feet deep, 1300 to 1400 feet off outside reef..." -- McMoneagle

The island where the wreckage can be found is called Nikumaroro. It's part of the Phoenix Island chain.

An Expedition Goes to Look for Earhart

On May 18, 2010, the tenth expedition to look for the remains of Amelia Earhart departed Seattle, Washington for Nikumaroro Island [above]. SeaBotix, Inc., a marine science and engineering company, has brought along a remotely operated submersible, capable of diving the 650 feet that McMoneagle claims is covering the remains of the plane.

While this expedition is not the result of McMoneagle's remote viewing, it is interested in his results and will attempt to validate his predictions by exploring the precise area that McMoneagle predicted -- as well as surrounding areas.

Viewzone has reported many previous attempts to recover the remains of Earhart's body. You can read about them HERE. While the analysis of remains is the subject of much debate and is still inconclusive, finding the wreckage of the twin engine plane that Earhart used would be difinitive in establishing where she ditched the plane and, in light of McMoneagle's other descriptions, how she died.

The expedition is expected to reach the location in the Pacific in mid-June. As soon as the expedition team is set up and begin their underwater survey we ought to know how accurate McMoneagle's remote viewing of the event really was.

Remote viewing of the past, present and the future

One of the interesting facts in Evidential Details is a description of some of the problems which remote viewers experience when attempting to view an event. One in particular, called the Analytic Overlay (AOL for short), happens when the remote viewer has some knowledge of the event. The knowledge doesn't necessarily have to be correct. It could be a report or story that the viewer has read in a newspaper. It could be something that the viewer has heard or seen that is associated with the targeted event. In any case, the information can easily pollute the stream of information obtained in the remote viewing session.

In the Princess Diana example above, McMoneagle was not asked to view the actual accident site, since that had been the subject of numerous photos and stories. Instead, he was asked to target the hotel where Diana and Fayed had been prior to their ride in the limousine.

The team at Stanford explored the abilities of many remote viewers to view and report on real-time events. In some instances they were to explore secret military sites, both domestic and abroad, and they achieved great success. But the most fascinating aspect of remote viewing, to me anyway, is the ability of a remote viewer to see the future.

We recently corresponded with another remote viewer who wished to remain anonymous. His specialty is predicting the future and he explained some of the most recent work with remote viewing.

"In remote viewing there are three events that take place: the Remote Viewing Attempt (RVA), where the remote viewer actually tries to see the targer event in the future. Then there is the target event (TE)-- the thing the remote viewer is trying to 'see' -- and the Task Assignment (TA) -- where some person gives the assignment of what the remote viewer should be looking for.

When viewing a future event, the traditional sessions were of the order TA - RVA - TE. But these didn't always result in good predictions. So some researchers tried a different order of RVA - TE - TA.

In the latter, the Remote Viewer is still attempting to predict a future event, but the person assigning the task does it after the Remote Viewer has made the prediction and after the actual target event. The person assigning the event looks at some events that have already happened, say in the past month, and selects one and writes it down on a paper and puts it in a safe. Meanwhile, months before this -- and before the target event has happened -- the remote viewer is asked to 'see' what the assignment is and describe it. He is told that it will be in the safe."

This second method has been shown to be extremely accurate. But why?

The theory is that we live in multiple universes or multiple futures. The future has not been determined but the events are determined by what we are doing right now, in the present.

At each moment we are at an intersection with many paths leading to future events. By placing some event in the future we are, in effect, calling out or putting up a sign that says, "Over here! This is the path!"

In order to "see" the future accurately there must be a "marker" event -- an attractor of sorts -- to pull us in to certain paths of possibilities. Since the target event was chosen in the future, the unique future where the event happened has been established. The path is then followed by the remote viewer, allowing him to visualize the events of the future. It can therefore be predicted.

Remote Viewing 2012?

According to Wikipedia:

Tibetan Monks on December 26, 2004, used Remote Viewing to predict the future.

"Between now and 2012 the world super powers will continue to engage in regional wars. Terrorism and covert war will be the main problem. In world politics something will happen in and around 2010. At that time the world powers will threaten to destroy each other. Between 2010 and 2012, the whole world will get polarized and prepare for the ultimate dooms day. Heavy political maneuvers and negotiations will take place with little progress. In 2012, the world will start plunging into a total destructive nuclear war. And at that time something remarkable will happen, says, Buddhist monk of Tibet. Supernatural divine powers will intervene. The destiny of the world is not to self-destruct at this time.

Scientific interpretation of the monks' statements makes it evident that the Extra Terrestrial powers are watching us every step of the way. They will intervene in 2012 and save the world from self-destruction."

It is possible that the Tibetan Monks used the Dalai Lama as their future marker? Since he is reborn again and again, they could use his next incarnation as a sign to guide them to the correct path of the future. The fact that there will continue to be incarnations of the Dalai Lama also supports the idea that 2012 will not be the end of the world, but an opportunity for transformation.

There are many people who are saying that there is an impenetrable wall at December 21, 2012, which prevents seeing beyond this date. Those who believe in the "marker" theory suggest that perhaps no one will be around after that date. Others think that some kind of transforming event will happen -- so different from anything we have experienced as to be unthinkable and beyond description.

When we asked our remote viewer to explain what will happen at the end of 2012, he simply said, "No comment."

As singer Michael Stipe from the musical group REM puts it, "It's the end of the world as we know it, And I feel fine."

Comments:

Dear Sir, I read with interest your article on Amelia Earhart. The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) has been researching the Earhart disappearance for over 20 years, with research based solely upon the "scientific method". Amongst historical documents gathered, are several which had been sent to George Palmer Putnam by psychics claiming to have information on the location Earhart's downed Electra 10E.

Although I am neither a believer nor disbeliever in remote viewing, one incident fascinates me. It is reported in an article in Popular Aviation magazine (see http://tighar.org/Projects/Earhart/Documents/Jennings_Article/Psychicsarticle.html ), and deals with a Detroit architect who was impelled to draw several pictures of ongoing events which involved Earhart after her disappearance. One such illustrations showed Earhart with a "box of some sort".

While researching the Kiribati National Archives in Tarawa in 1997, TIGHAR member Peter MacQuerie discovered a formerly secret file labeled "Discovery of Human Remains on Gardner Island" which contained 15 official telegrams and one letter regarding the discovery of a partial skeleton on Gardner Island in 1940. Contained was the following: Sept. 23, 1940

Telegram No. 71 from Gallagher to Jack Barley, Resident Commissioner, Ocean Island Transcript:

Further research indicated the numbers on the Gardner Island sextant box fit the pattern of manufacturer’s serial numbers and Naval Observatory calibration numbers for sextants of the type used by Noonan. The sextant box is very similar in proportion and size to the picture drawn by the remote viewer in 1937.

The bones, sextant box, shoes, and other artifacts were lost during the turmoil of WWII. You may find it interesting to read the complete article on the tighar.org web site.

Dan,

Thanks for the heads up on the remote viewing lessons. I never saw that in the table of contents on your main page. What other goodies do you have that are not linked? These should be there. They are really interesting.

Just my humble opinion.......and by the way you have a lot of interesting info in your magazine, keep up the good work.

When humans were created (not life as such) about three hundred thousand years ago in their current form by what we may refer to as our Gods of antiquity by means of cloning, with this procedure eventually finding its way in to the annals of history as the creation of Adam and Eve and recorded in the Bible as such, those entities, beings or by what ever name they went by kept a close eye on us.

Down the road and along the way those Gods kept in contact with humans, especially the Jews and my personal hunch is, should there be an event on the horizon which would portend the annihilation of the Jews, once again these same Gods of antiquity may intervene as they have in the past. Not unlike the incident of the Deluge which was a predictable (by the ones who were in the know) but yet an unavoidable event. Had it not been predictable Noah could not have been warned?

The same holds true for an event which went down in history as the Exodus. These same Gods or beings, who ever they may be, did not want to see the Jews perish altogether in the distant past and it would come as no surprise if they would intervene in some future event, something some of our so called world leaders should consider, that is if they had any inkling of the humans past and it is doubtful that any of them have.
